The Battle of Gettysburg is considered to be the beginning of the end of the Confederacy. General Robert E. Lee's incursion into Maryland and Pennsylvania (with a planned turn toward Baltimore or Washington) was designed to frighten the North and force the Union into negotiations to end the Civil War. From July 1st through 3rd a fierce battle raged in the hills and valleys surrounding this small village. Ironically, on the afternoon of July 4th, 1863, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia began its hasty retreat back to the relative safety of Virginia.
More than 51,000 were killed or wounded during those three hellish days. Lee's exhausted and depleted forces never fully recovered from Gettysburg, even though they continued to fight for almost two more years.
The original chromolithograph was created in 1888 as a premium for Duke cigarette customers. This full color print has the look of a pastel and pencil sketch.
We have meticulously reproduced this piece to match the detail of the original. Each piece is individually printed using the same method used to create limited edition fine art. We use an extraordinary 100% cotton rag, fine art paper. This heavy textured paper is made in one of the oldest paper mills in England. Created using a mold process it closely resembles hand laid paper. In may respects these reproductions are more attractive and of higher quality than the original piece, from which they were made.
