 1870 Hand-Colored Antique Map of Ontario

In the 1870’s, Canada grew dramatically with addition of Manitoba and British Columbia to the Commonwealth. In 1872, a German arbitrator awarded control of the San Juan Islands (in the straight between Vancouver and Washington) to the United States. In the United States, U.S. Grant was reelected President and huge fires leveled Chicago (in 1871) and a large part of Boston (in 1872). The U.S. also establishes the first National Park at Yellowstone. Throughout most of the 1870’s, Cuban peasants, led by Jose Marti rebelled against Spain’s brutal and oppressive rule. In Honduras, Civil war broke out in 1872 between the government and ex-President Medina. Medina was defeated in July.
This incredibly detailed map was hand-painted by craftsmen in Philadelphia. This is an excellent example of the extraordinary workmanship that set Mitchell maps apart from those of his peers. This map shows the various towns, cities, road, railways, mountains, rivers and other geographic features.

Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width).
