The late 1800’s were tumultuous times in Africa. Across the continent Europeans sought control of various regions. In 1885, the British were struggling to maintain control of Egypt and the Sudan. In a battle made famous in modern films, the British garrison was wiped out at Khartoum as they awaited reinforcements. On the day they finally arrived, the garrison’s commander, General Gordon was killed. The Egyptian campaign continued across North Africa. Also in 1885, Prince Bismark gained a strong African presence by obtaining control of many lands including a strip of coastal West Africa. Germany also managed to keep the British and French from gaining autonomy, in the Congo Basin, when they negotiated an agreement to make the area in which all were free to trade.
This beautiful lithographed color map shows the rapidly changing national boundaries across this continent. Cities, towns, geographic features, railroads and a proposed railway across the Sahara along with desert caravan routes. The Suez Canal region is shown in inset.
If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique engravings, & prints are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. A beautiful old print or engraving is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique prints allow you to present someone a piece of the past.

All sizes shown are approximate. Matted maps or prints are smaller than the "matted" dimensions shown by about 6".
All of our authentic, more than 100-year old, maps and prints come double matted within museum quality, archival rag mat boards at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.
Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width). For example a matted piece measuring 32" x 40" would be considered OVERSIZE (72"). For complete delivery information, see Information page.
All our authentic antiques are one-of-a-kind items. Since they are actual old works of art expect small imperfections. In some cases we may have more than one of a particular map or print. Since each is unique they may vary slightly from the item shown (when we have more than one if a particular item, the colors may be different than those shown). Each antique map or print has been dry cleaned by hand and are conservation mounted and protected in attractive rag mats. Every work in our gallery carries a lifetime guarantee of authenticity (authentic antiques only) and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee (see Information page for details). Again, the sizes stated are approximate.
