While the U.S. was deeply embroiled in a bloody civil war, the rest of the world was far from stable. The German Confederation sent troops into and demanded that Denmark hand over control of Holstein and Schleswig. Danish Prince George I is made King of Greece. In January, a revolution against Russian rule began in Poland and spread to Lithuania and portions of Russia during the rest of the year. Napoleon III sends troops into Mexico City and proclaims Austrian Maximilian Emperor of Mexico, while in South America civil war erupted in Uruguay and New Grenada was renamed the United States of Columbia. Civil war also breaks out in Afghanistan, while in Eastern Asia the French establish a Cambodian protectorate.
This incredible map shows Autralia when it was still a vast unexplored land. Huge areas of the continent had yet to be explored when this map was created. The explored regions are shown in detail, as are the cities an counties along the coasts. This is a rare and fascinating snapshot of this wild land "down-under" almost 140 years ago.
