• A Home Away from Home •
This photograph shows the ingenuity of the Union soldiers as they waited patiently through the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. It shows what appears to be a soldier, sitting next to an elaborate shelter that includes tents shades, hand made furniture and much more. It is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a soldier during the long periods of waiting between battles.
The photograph, from which this image was created, was taken in 1864 by Timothy O'Sullivan, a former Brady Studio photographer. This extraordinary photograph was then painstakingly digitally corrected and enhanced to provide an almost perfect image of this historic scene.
