• The End of the Union Line •
This rocky hill at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge is a key feature of the battlefield and one of the most heavily visited sites in the park. Unlike the thickly wooded Big Round Top, this smaller hill had been partially cleared of trees a year or more prior to the battle. Strewn with loose rocks and large boulders, it offered a natural position from which to defend this important end of the Union line. Little Round Top had been manned by Union troops as early as the night of July 1. Yet, with the exception of a few soldiers from the Union army's Signal Corps, it remained largely unoccupied until late on the afternoon of July 2, when Confederate General Longstreet decided to attack this lightly fortified position.
General G.K Warren soon noted the weakness of this position and quickly moved troops into position to defend the hill. It was at the very end of the line that Colonel Joshua Chamberlain's 20t maine Infantry eventually routed the Confederate flanking attack with a daring charge down the hill into the Confederate lines. At the other side of the hill, a brave charge by Colonel Patrick O'Rourke's 140th New York Infantry routed attacking Texas infantry regiments, effectively ending the attack.
This amazing photograph was taken from the valley below Little Round Top near Gettysburg (through which the Confederate assault was launched). It was taken by a photographer from the Brady studio. The photograph you see was painstakingly digitally corrected and enhanced to provide an almost perfect image of this historic scene.
