In the United States in the 1870's, U.S. Grant ran for a second term in 1871 and was reelected. Huge fires leveled Chicago (in 1871) and a large part of Boston (in 1872). The first National Park is established at Yellowstone in the Wyoming Territory. In 1871, Congress also nullified all treaties with the Indian Nations and made the wards of the country. In the Southwest, Apache raids continue into the early 1870’s as bans of angry tribesman resist confinement on reservations. In 1871, Congress also nullified all treaties with the Indian Nations and made the wards of the country. In 1872, the country’s first mail order catalog came into existence as Montgomery Ward & Company, opened in Chicago. A great financial crisis occurred in 1873, which led to a depression that lasted for 6 years. In 1876, Colorado becomes a state and the U.S. Army sends troops to round up Sitting Bull and the Sioux and take them to the reservation. It was during this operation that Custer and his entire 7th Cavalry were killed at Little Big Horn. The 1876 U.S. presidential election was deadlocked. An electoral commission in 1877, who award 20 disputed votes to Rutherford B. Hayes, decides the election. He becomes the 19th president of the United States by one electoral vote.
Just across the East River from New York City, Brooklyn was the second largest municipality in the U.S.in the 1870s. Towering over the city, the Brooklyn Bridge (or East River Bridge at the time) was not yet done and wouldn't open to the public for another 4 years. The tallest buildings in the city were church steeples.
Currier & Ives was America's best known printer of high quality images and views of 19th century America. This is a large and incredibly detailed view of the premier midwestern city. Extremely rare, an original lithograph of the panorama would cost more than $10,000 (if you can find one).
We have meticulously reproduced this piece to match the color and detail of the original. Each piece is individually printed using the same method used to create limited edition art. We use 100% cotton rag, fine art paper. This heavy textured paper is made in one of the oldest paper mills in England. Created using a mold process it closely resembles hand laid paper. In may respects these reproductions are more attractive than the original antique maps.
If you would like us to add a description, custom inscription or dedication, please go to the inscription page (or click on the "Inscriptions" link at left).
Please note: Due to its size, the large framed map is only available with a cream-colored top mat. Plus, an additional $50 oversize shipping fee will be applied to orders for the large, framed map when it is shipped.

All sizes shown are approximate. Matted maps or prints are smaller than the "matted" dimensions shown by about 6".
All of our authentic, more than 100-year old, maps and prints come double matted within museum quality, archival rag mat boards at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.
Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width). For example a matted piece measuring 32" x 40" would be considered OVERSIZE (72"). For complete delivery information, see Information page.
All our authentic antiques are one-of-a-kind items. Since they are actual old works of art expect small imperfections. In some cases we may have more than one of a particular map or print. Since each is unique they may vary slightly from the item shown (when we have more than one if a particular item, the colors may be different than those shown). Each antique map or print has been dry cleaned by hand and are conservation mounted and protected in attractive rag mats. Every work in our gallery carries a lifetime guarantee of authenticity (authentic antiques only) and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee (see Information page for details). Again, the sizes stated are approximate.
